The primary goal of periodontal therapy is the long term preservation of comfortable, esthetic and functional natural teeth in a healthy periodontal environment. Following active treatment, reinfection and progression of periodontal lesions may only be prevented through continuous patient monitoring.
Regular maintenance visits are therefore essential to provide professional support to patients daily oral hygiene measures. Spicific procedures should be performed during maintenance visits. In addition, important factors in assessing patient’s risk for recurrent peridontitis should be known by the dentist. Frequency of recall visits of periodontal patients during maintenance therapy should be determined.
